How To Prepare For A Tornado (Home Version) - 4/4/21

Have you ever been through a tornado?

If you have, it must have been panicking.

But if you were prepared, you might have not panicked a lot.

Today, I'll tell you how to prepare for a tornado step by step.

STEP 1: MAKE AN EMERGENCY KIT

What is an emergency kit?

Well, an emergency kit contains items that are used in an emergency such as a hurricane.

In tornado, it is good to have an emergency kit.

Pretend you want to eat when you are taking shelter.

You will have food because you brought your kit with you.

You will need:
  • Water—at least a gallon per person, per day
  • Non-perishable food (such as dried fruit, peanut butter, or energy bars)
  • First aid kit
  • Cash
  • Prescription medicines
  • Extra batteries or an alternative power source
  • Matches in a waterproof container (allow an adult to help)
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap
  • Paper plates, plastic cups and utensils, paper towels
  • Battery-powered or hand-cranked radio
  • Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person
  • Flashlights
  • Helmet
  • Sturdy shoes
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Can opener (manual)
  • Local maps
  • Pet and service animal supplies
  • Baby supplies (formula, diapers, etc.)
  • Extra pair of eyeglasses
  • Your container to put all these things in (Backpack is better)

TIP: Keep track of the weather where you live to know where to put your kit.

(For example, if there is a hurricane coming, put your kit on higher ground).

For now, keep it in your safe room.

(Learn about a safe room at step 2)

STEP 2: Find Your Safe Room

Where will you take shelter when you know there is a tornado warning?

As step 2, you will need to find a room you will take shelter during a tornado.

But, there are some rules to follow:

  1. Pick a room that is at the lowest level of your house. (If you have a basement, use that.)
  2. Pick a room that has NO windows. (If there are windows, debris can crash into your safe room where you are in.)
  3. Pick a room that is in the middle of your lowest floor.

Yay! You found a room! Now make sure everyone that lives with you knows where that room is.

STEP 3: Know Your Signs

What I mean by "know your signs" is that you need to know what "warnings" and "watches" are.

WATCH:

Do you hear someone on TV say that the county you live in is under a tornado watch?

That means that tornados are possible. It does not mean that a tornado is happening right now, it means that a tornado could form.

If you are under a tornado watch, be ready to race off to your safe room.

WARNING:

Are you under a tornado warning?

That means that YOU NEED TO TAKE SHELTER NOW!!

A tornado has formed and you need to rush to your safe spot right away.

STEP 4: Practice

Now, you need to practice. Pretend that there is a tornado hitting your town. Run to your safe room.

That is it! I hope this was helpful and that you can follow these steps to prepare. See you next time! Bye!
