How to Prepare for a Winter Storm (Home Version) - 1/31/22

Snow in winter

Everyone needs to prepare for a winter storm.

In the northwest, east, and northeast parts of the US, every state in the US gets a snowstorm.

They can last a few hours to many days.

When a winter storm arrives, you need to be ready for anything it brings.

That means you need to be ready.

Today, I'll give you ways to be prepared for a winter storm.

Way 1: Have an emergency kit on hand

Having an emergency on hand is a great way to be prepared.

Each person in your household should have one, but you could have two people have one for each kit, etc.

You can learn more about making an emergency kit here.

Some items contain:

-Water

-Non-perishable food

-Masks

-Hand sanitizer

-First aid kit

-Activities

-Extra pair of clothing

-A power bank with cable

Way 2: Charge all devices

You should charge your devices to 100% before the storm so that if the power goes out, you can still call people, etc.

Also, a power bank for your devices can save you from when your device runs out of power.

There are different types of power banks, so pick the one (or more) that fit your needs, like solar-powered or just the ones that you can charge with a cable.

They can be expensive, but they are worth it!

You may even already have one in the comfort of your own home!

Way 3: Have a flashlight and many batteries ready

You should have at least one flashlight and extra batteries ready to go if the power goes out during the night.

Use the batteries if your flashlight needs new batteries.

Headlamps are great as well.

If you have more than one flashlight, you can put them around your house, like one on each floor of your location or one flashlight in each room.

If the power goes out, wherever you are, you can have a flashlight close to where you are so you can use it.

Way 4: Stay warm

You will want to stay warm during a winter storm.

A simple thing to do is to wear a jacket.

You could also wear extra layers of clothing.

Way 5: Have a radio ready

Radios can be hand-cranked, solar-powered, or battery-powered.

They can even be all of those.

You can use radios for listening to the weather in the area you live.

You can also listen to songs, and much more.

In this case, having a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert is a good idea.

If you don't want it, it's alright.

You may have an old radio that still works, so you should use that.

Way 6: Know your signs

You need to know your signs when prepping for a winter storm.

There are three signs:

-Winter storm watch

-Winter storm warning

-Winter weather advisory

WINTER STORM WATCH

When there is a winter storm watch, there is a chance of a blizzard, heavy freezing rain, heavy sleet, or heavy snow.

Alert may change over time since winter storm watches are sent 12 hours (half a day) to 48 hours (two days) before the storm approaches the area.

WINTER STORM WARNING

If you are under a winter storm warning, that means a blizzard, heavy freezing rain, heavy sleet, or heavy snow will happen.

It may also mean that the listed above is happening right now.

Winter storm warnings get sent 12 to 14 hours before the storm.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY

Under a winter weather advisory?

Accumulation of freezing rain, freezing drizzle, and sleet will happen.

You should be aware of this, as this will cause problems.

I hope these tips help you get ready for a winter storm!
